Why Photo Dynamic Therapy is Great for Acne

Whether you are a teen or twenty or even form a part of the ageing population, you may have faced the traumatic effects of acne. If you have tried the numerous acne treatments over the years, you have most likely been disappointed with the results. Face washes, creams, medicated solutions and even oral medication have, at best, temporary results and often not even that. With the new photo dynamic therapy (PDT) for acne you can get great skin in a short time.

What is photo dynamic therapy anyway?

Photo dynamic therapy is a non-invasive procedure that is one of the latest acne treatments available.  It is a treatment that uses intense pulsed light therapy combined with the application of the photo sensitizing agent, usually Levulan (ALA). It consists of these steps:

•    Prepping of the skin by cleaning or microdermabrasion to remove whiteheads and dirt
•    Application of the photosensitizing agent
•    Incubation period that now lasts for 30-120 minutes
•    Timed exposure to light (different lights determined by the doctor)

Different topical solutions will be used depending on the kind and severity of the acne. The same goes for the light as red light, blue light, PDL and IPL lasers may be used.  Most of the time, three sessions will be required to clear the acne problem completely, though some people may require more or less.

What you can expect from photo dynamic therapy for acne treatment

Whether you are bothered by a few pimples that spoil your appearance or a face that is full of angry red acne stops, you should consider photo dynamic therapy. You can expect:

•    A quick resolution (within a few weeks) of your acne problems
•    No scarring
•    Non-invasive procedure
•    No long term side-effects
•    Clear skin that looks younger

Very severe incidences of acne may require up to five treatments and there has to be a gap of two to three weeks between the treatments to allow the skin to recover.

How does photo dynamic therapy work as an acne treatment?

The sensitizing solution used penetrates the skin, more particularly the eruptions. Then light therapy is used and it injures the targeted cells and tissue and also affects the adjacent tissue. It kills not only the visible acne but also invisible and potential eruptions. PDT shrinks the sebaceous glands and kills bacteria that cause acne. It helps with large pores, non-pitted acne scars, mottle pigmentation, skin laxity, dull skin and more.

After the acne treatment, there is almost always redness, swelling and peeling of the skin, which is a normal reaction to the treatment. The skin is temporarily more prone to sunburn and patients are advised not to expose their skin to the sun for at least 48 hours and use a strong sun block thereafter. The procedure is not completely pain free and many patients have reported stinging and burning sensations and itchiness as the skin takes time to heal. Some people actually feel nothing but a sensation of warmth when the light is applied.  You may require follow-up treatments or at least consultations with your doctor to assess the skin condition and there is no guarantee that the acne will not recur.

Photo dynamic therapy is one among the many acne treatments available and is often used when other treatments have failed. It is especially helpful in treating resistant acne or cystic acne.

With different laser treatments available for a variety of medical and cosmetic conditions, it is time you opt for a modern therapy among acne treatments – that studies have shown – work
