How Many Units of Botox for Forehead?

Botox Cosmetic injections and other similar treatments are the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedures every year. Even a global pandemic couldn’t stop people from getting their cosmetic Botox treatments. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeon’s 2020 statistics report, 4.4 million botulinum toxin type A procedures were performed in the US last year, despite lockdowns happening all over the country. There’s no denying that Botox is popular, and for good reason. It’s one of the most effective anti-aging treatments on the market. Just a few drops in the forehead can take years off your whole face. Read on if you’re curious about how many units you’ll need for Botox forehead treatment.

Botox and the aging forehead

The natural aging process causes hairlines to retreat, making the forehead appear more prominent. When you add to that the lines and wrinkles caused by a lifetime of active facial expression and days spent in the sun unprotected from harmful UV rays, what you get is a forehead that gives away your age – or worse, makes you look older than you actually are. The average forehead takes up approximately one third of the face even before the hairline recedes, so an aging forehead is difficult to hide. Luckily, we live in an age of abundant minimally invasive anti-aging procedures, and Botox injections are the most popular of them all.

Botox works by inhibiting the movement of the muscles that cause wrinkles to form. In the forehead area, Botox is especially effective on:

  • Glabella lines (frown lines) – Vertical creases between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines (surprise lines) – Horizontal lines across the forehead
  • Bunny lines – Lines at the top of the nose caused by crinkling up the nose

Of course, Botox can be used on other areas of the face as well. The above are examples of lines and wrinkles found specifically in the forehead area, which Botox is wonderfully effective at softening.

How many units of Botox are needed for the forehead

Every person is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to Botox treatment. The number of Botox units needed, and the exact location of the injections will depend on the specific lines being treated as well as the anatomy of the individual. In general, 15-30 units may be needed for the forehead, or as many as 40-50 for between the brows. The injection sites for addressing forehead creases and brow wrinkles include:

  • Beneath the hairline
  • Near the temples
  • Center of the forehead
  • Above the brows
  • Between the brows

Depending on the goals of the patient, their particular anatomy, and their history with Botox treatments, 3 to 5 units per injection site may be recommended. For example, for softening the glabella lines, your practitioner may inject 5 units in two sites above each of the brows and one between the brows for a total of 25 units. Another person who is in for just a touchup appointment may only need 3 units in each injection site. The best way to determine how many Botox units you’ll need to treat your forehead lines is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mani. After a careful examination of the treatment area, she’ll create a customized Botox treatment plan designed to soften your forehead wrinkles and refresh your appearance.
