How are Spider Veins Removed?

Spider veins are tiny networks of veins just beneath the surface of the skin that become visible with age. They can be caused by heredity, weight gain or a number of other factors. They become visible because the veins are irritated and swell. This is why spider veins are often accompanied by symptoms like throbbing pain and sensitivity in the area.

A number of new techniques have been developed to remove spider veins and restore the skin of the legs, face and hands to a more natural look with less discomfort.

Sclerotherapy is one means of removing spider veins. It uses a liquid or foam solution, like Asclera, injected directly into the affected vein network. This solution irritates the inner lining of the veins and causes them to swell shut. Once the veins are shut, the blood flow to the area stops and the veins instantly begin to fade away.

Eventually the weakened vein tissue is reabsorbed by the body and they disappear altogether. Sclerotherapy can be done in less than an hour and has few side effects. Most patients can return to normal activity within a couple days of treatment.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is one of the most common ways to treat spider veins. It uses lasers to target the veins through the skin and heat them up. Again, the heat causes the veins to become irritated and close themselves off. This treatment is effective, but it comes with greater side effects.

Some patients find that the heat of the laser is uncomfortable during treatment, and that they feel a sun burn sensation on the treated area for several days afterward. The laser will also make your skin more sensitive for a period of time.

Radio Frequency Therapy

Radio frequency therapy is a semi-invasive procedure that uses a small catheter to direct radio frequencies into the vein network. It works similar to the other two treatment methods by blocking off the vein and essentially cauterizing it. This treatment can take up to an hour and has minimal side effects, but may require some additional down time for recovery before returning to normal activity.

San Diego Cosmetic Laser Clinic

These are just three of the most common ways that people are treating spider veins today. There are also a number of products like support stockings that are used to apply compression to the area and redirect blood flow. These products are often used in conjunction with the above-mentioned therapies for best results.
