Dermal Fillers and Wrinkles

It’s official. The wrinkle has met its match. Today’s dermal fillers provide an accessible, non-surgical anti-aging solution to everything from minimal wrinkles to deeper facial folds and volume loss. Treatment with dermal fillers can be customized to address a single wrinkle or a whole treatment area such as the forehead or around the eyes. Dermal filler treatment is quick—you’re in and out of the office in no time. If you’re looking for a solution to your pesky wrinkles, here’s what you need to know about dermal fillers and wrinkles.

What causes wrinkles?

The formation of wrinkles is the result of structural changes in one or more of the three layers of our skin: the outer layer (epidermis), the inner layer (dermis), or the layer of fat beneath both (subcutaneous tissue). These structural changes can be caused by both the natural aging process and environmental influences such as sun exposure and pollution. They can also be caused by repeated facial expressions.

A decrease in collagen production starts as early as age 20. Collagen supports the functions of elastin and hyaluronic acid, which helps the skin to maintain its spongy elasticity. It is found mainly in the dermis, and depletion results in a loss of skin firmness and hydration as well as the formation of wrinkles. The body’s production of hyaluronic acid also begins to diminish with age. Around age 50, the loss of fat in the subcutaneous tissue results in a loss of volume in the face, as well as sagging skin and additional wrinkles and folds.

UV radiation is responsible for approximately 90% of the visible signs of skin aging. Sun damage, also known as photoaging, takes place when the sun’s UV rays trigger the production of free radicals in the skin. Those free radicals cause damage to DNA and speed up the breakdown of the skin’s structures, including collagen and elastin. Air pollution can do the same, triggering the same free radical damage in skin, and resulting in the same premature lines, wrinkles, and volume loss.

There was a time when surgery was the only answer to these signs of aging. But now we have dermal fillers, a non-surgical solution for filling in those wrinkles, adding volume, and restoring a youthful appearance to the face.

Dermal fillers for wrinkles

Dermal fillers have been around for 40 years, but they’ve come a long way since the 1980s. Back then, bovine collagen was the only FDA-approved filler available. Today, the most popular filler formulas contain hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin. The hyaluronic acid bonds with the elastin and collagen, providing volume, elasticity and structure to the skin. Dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid help to plump up soft tissue, fill in wrinkles, and add volume, restoring smooth skin and youthful facial contours.

Each hyaluronic facial filler is created for a specific purpose. The molecule size of each formula may vary, depending on the type of wrinkle or the area of the face it is intended to treat. A smaller molecule size may be used in a thin formula that’s created to treat the delicate skin around the lips, for example, while a larger molecule size may be used in a thicker formula that’s used to add volume to the cheek area.

Here are some of the dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid that we offer at San Diego Cosmetic Laser Clinic and how they can be used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles on your face and restore your youthful radiance.

The various formulas in the RESTYLANE family can be used to restore volume and fullness to cheeks, correct moderate to severe smile lines and nasolabial folds, smooth wrinkles around the mouth, and plump lips for luscious fullness. Results last 6-18 months, depending on the treatment area.

The RESTYLANE LYFT formula uses a larger particle size than the formulas in its line of fillers in order to restore volume and youthful contours to the cheeks. The formula also corrects mid-face wrinkles and folds.  Results last 6 months.

The range of JUVÉDERM formulas can be used to fill and shape the lips, lift and fill the cheeks, fill in deep wrinkles, and correct surface wrinkles and facial lines for stunning, natural, and ageless results. Results last up to a year.

This formula from the JUVÉDERM family of hyaluronic acid fillers is specially formulated to instantly repair age-related volume loss in the mid-face area. The thick gel is injected deep into the dermis to correct wrinkles and restore fullness to cheeks. Results can last up to two years.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are not the only cosmetic fillers available.  There are a number of facial fillers that contain other active ingredients. Radiesse, for example, contains calcium hydroxylapatite. When it’s injected into the subcutaneous tissue, the thick gel fills in deep wrinkles in the immediate and the calcium hydroxylapatite stimulates the production of collagen for long-term results.

It’s important to note that dermal fillers are best for treating volume loss and fine lines and wrinkles that are visible when the face is still. For wrinkles that appear only when the face creates expression, Botox is recommended. Botox is a cosmetic injectable, but not a dermal filler. Rather than filling wrinkles, it relaxes the muscles that cause them.
