Can I Do Laser In The Summer?

Laser treatments are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures we offer at San Diego Cosmetic Laser Clinic because of the amazing results. However, one of the most common questions we have been getting recently is whether laser treatments can be completed during the summer. Let’s dive into the answer to this question, and if you have any additional questions give us a call at (619) 583-7555.

Most Laser Treatments Can Be Performed in Summer

A majority of the laser treatments offered as San Diego Cosmetic Laser Clinic can be performed during the summer, with a few exceptions. An example of some of the laser treatments that can be performed during the summertime with no restrictions are laser hair removal (as long as the areas are not frequently exposed to the sun), skin tightening, and Fraxel wrinkle treatment. However, make sure to vigorously apply sunblock to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

What Laser Treatments Are Not Advisable During Summer?

While many laser treatments are perfectly fine during the summer, there are a few options that we do not advise undergoing during the summer. Most of these treatments are short wave laser treatments, also called IPL, which are primarily used to address pigmentation issues, rosacea, and vascular lesions. These lasers target hyperpigmentation created by melanin, and after the treatment, it would be counterproductive to get exposed to the sun. Extended exposure to UV rays can reverse the treatment, leading to an increase in melanin production.

Can I Get Laser Treatments on Tanned Skin?

If you have been spending countless hours outside this summer and have developed a strong tan, then we suggest you wait to schedule a laser treatment. We generally advise against laser treatments on tanned skin, and if you do go ahead with laser treatments, certain precautions must be enacted. Most laser treatments target darkened skin, and when the skin is tan it can be difficult to spot the darker skin. Before a treatment, try to stay out of the sun for 3 days prior and make sure you do not have any kind of sunburn or sun damage.

How Can I Protect Myself From the Sun After a Laser Treatment

While you can get most laser treatments during the summer, you still need to protect yourself from the sun. Get at a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30 or more, and apply it all over your body, focusing specifically on the treated area. While there are no sun restrictions, avoiding exposure to the sun after a laser treatment can help the effects of the treatment last longer.
